Etna Volcano offers dazzling natural fireworks display in early days of 2012!!! Thick plume of volcanic ash and orange lava reached up to 5,000 meters above Mount Etna, therefore a crisis emergency committee gathered at the airport of Catania to monitor the situation (scroll down for VIDEO and photos)

The column of volcanic ash and rocks was spotted Thursday morning over Etna in Sicily, announced Catania’s Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology.

A trail of lava was also observed on top of the volcano near the southeast crater, and now is heading to desert region of Valle del Bove.

Italian authorities sheduled a gathering at the airport in Catania to keep a close eye on the developments and decide what action should be taken. The officials decided not to close the airport, however the air traffic limited until 13.00 GMT because of low visibility caused by the ash cloud. Flights departing or arriving at Catania airport are still a few.

The column of plume was blasted up to 5,000 meters altitude and now heads toward southwest.

With a height of 3329 meters, Etna is Europe’s highest active volcano. This eruption had its climax spaned over several hours and it was Etna’s first activity in 2012.
