북한 여행이 처음이라는 네덜란드 관광객이 우리에게 다가와 놀라운 표정을 지으며 남편과 대화를 나눈다. 

 

"I can't believe that North Koreans can be as hilarious as we see right now. I've never seen smiling North Koreans in the picture. What I saw about North Korea in the media before this trip were the military parades in a huge square and the miserable kids begging the crust in the muds."

 

(북한 사람들이 이렇게 희희낙락할 수 있다니 믿을 수가 없어요. 저는 지금껏 사진에서 북한 사람이 웃고 있는 모습을 본 적이 없어요. 내가 북한에 오기 전 매스컴에서 본 북한은 커다란 광장에서 군사 퍼레이드나 하고 비참한 어린아이들이 진흙탕 위에서 구걸하는 모습들이었어요.)

 

"You are not alone to think so. So did I before my first trip to this northern part of my fatherland. True, this country, as we witnessed it through the rural area, is obviously experiencing economic difficulties. Though, these people look quite O.K., don't they? They seem to have been belied by the scenes of this country demonized by the West."

 

(당신만 그렇게 생각하는 게 아니에요. 나도 내 조국 북부에 처음 오기 전까지는 그런 장면들만 봐왔어요. 우리가 농촌을 지나면서 본 대로 이 나라가 분명히 경제적으로 어려운 게 사실입니다. 그렇지만, 이 사람들 보면 그런 대로 괜찮아 보이지 않아요? 서방에 의해 악마화 된 북한의 모습 때문에 이들이 잘못 알려져 있는 것 같아요.)
