역사상 넷째로 강력한 규모 9.0의 대지진이 11일 오후 2시46분 일본 열도를 강타했다. 지진으로 인한 최대 10m의 쓰나미는 일본 도호쿠(東北) 해안지역을 뒤덮었다. 재난 발생 4일째인 14일 현재 사망자 1만1000여 명, 실종자 4만여 명 등 전체적으로 5만여 명 이상이 희생된 것으로 예상된다.

로이터 통신에 따르면 경제적 손실액은 14조~15조 엔(약 192조~206조원) 규모로 추산된다. 피해복구를 위해 일본 정부와 세계 각국이 함께 움직이고 있다. 한국도 100여 명의 긴급구조대가 14일 오후 센다이 인근에 도착해 본격적인 구조작업을 벌이기 시작했다.
