美 정부, 911 ' 테러로 인한 암 발생 인정

미국 정부가 911테러 발생 11주년을 앞두고 당시 테러 후유증 등으로 암이 발생한 사실을 공식 인정하기로 했다고 9일(현지시각) 뉴욕포스트가 단독 보도했다.

 

신문은 미국 국립직업안전보건원(NIOSH) 관계자의 정보를 인용해 그동안 911테러 피해자들에게서 발생한 암이 911테러 후유증과 관계있다는 사실을 조만간 공식 발표하게 될 것이라고 보도했다.

 

수천 명에 달하는 피해자들의 소송을 대표했던 마이클 바레츠 변호사도 “먼지가 호흡기 질환에만 관계된 것이 아니고 암과도 연관이 있다는 과학적 증거가 입증됐다.”며 이 같은 발표 사실을 확인했다.

 

뉴욕 경찰 출신으로 911테러가 일어난 장소에서 몇 달간 일한 후 2003년 백혈병 판정을 받았던 존 월콧은 “정말 가슴 찡한 일이다. 이미 오래전에 결정되었어야 하는 데 11년이나 걸렸다.”며 감회를 피력했다.

 

현재 911테러로 인한 피해자를 보호하는 법이 통과되어 4만 명이 넘는 사람들이 관리되고 있으며 이 중 2만 명은 병원 치료를 받은 것으로 알려졌다. 최근 분석에 의하면 400명이 넘는 피해자들이 911테러와 관련된 암 발생으로 사망한 것으로 나타났다.

 

약 27억 7천 달러에 달하는 피해자 보상 예산이 책정되어 있으나, 피해자들은 그동안 관련 보상이 제때에 적절히 지급되지 않아 많은 불만을 표출했다. 피해자의 한 사람인 토마스 길마틴은 “암이 추가되었지만, 보상금도 추가되지는 않았다.”면서 “오바마가 보상 법안에 서명한 지 2년이 넘었지만 우리는 10센트도 받지 못했다.”며 불만을 나타냈다.
